Paula Van Goes
Paula Van Goes is a freelance musician in Nashville, Tennessee and currently teaches saxophone and other classes at Middle Tennessee State University and Tennessee State University. She is an award-winning performer and clinician who has toured and lectured throughout Bolivia, Brazil, Ukraine and the United States on saxophone as well as flute and clarinet. Through her research, Dr. Van Goes has become an advocate for Brazilian concert saxophone music. Her dissertation, Brazilian Music for Saxophone: A Survey of Solo and Small Chamber Works, brought her into contact with many of Brazil’s leading classical composers and their students, and has lead to several trips to South America, where she has performed, taught, and collected new compositions.
Dr. Van Goes is co-founder of the Greenbrook Ensemble, which is a flute, saxophone and piano trio that was formed in 2007. The Nashville based ensemble is committed both to finding new compositions for flute and saxophone and to creating our own new music. Recent performance venues include “Live in Studio C” on Nashville Public Radio, the American Musicological Society Southern Chapter Annual Conference, Flute Festival Mid-South and NASA Region VI Conferences. The Greenbrook Ensemble has premiered works by Liduino Pitombeira, Jason Emerson, and Ingrid Stölzel. Their debut CD The Greenbrook Ensemble will be available in January 2012.
She is tenor saxophonist with the Louisiana Saxophone Quartet, along with Griffin Campbell, Jennifer Foret and Richard Schwartz. Since its formation in 2009 the quartet has performed throughout the Gulf Coast region. Recently, the ensemble was featured at the 2011 North American Saxophone Alliance Region VI conference in Jacksonville, Florida. In June 2011 the quartet toured South America performing, adjudicating, and teaching at the Conservatório de Tatuí and the music schools of UNRIO and UFRJ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. At the III International Saxophone and Clarinet Encounter in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia they performed to critical acclaim. The Louisiana Saxophone Quartet was hailed by the Bolivian newspaper Ovación as "a group of four virtuoso saxophonists that possess excellent technical attributes and a deep understanding of the music they perform."
Paula holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Maryland, a Master of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Past academic appointments include Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, and Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, Louisiana.
