Javier Valerio (2011)
Javier Valerio is widely recognized as one of the pioneers and leading classical saxophonist in Latin America. After graduating in 1993 at Indiana University School of Music, as a student of the world known saxophonist, Eugene Rousseau, Valerio returned to his home country, Costa Rica, and reestablished the saxophone program. He became the first Costa Rican to obtain a university degree in saxophone in the Latin America area. Since 1994, he has been teaching as an Associate Professor of the School of Music at University of Costa Rica. He is founder and Director of the Sax Fest Costa Rica International, the organizer of the future ALASAX (Latin American Saxophone Alliance) and founder and member of the renowned saxophone and percussion quintet, SONSAX. From 1999 to 2001, Valerio studied with the jazz saxophonist Gary Campbel, obtaining his Master degree in Jazz Studies at Florida International University , Miami, Florida. He was also an Adjunct professor of the Classical Saxophone Studio at FIU, the New World School of the Arts in Miami, and a member of the Florida Saxophone Quartet.
Valerio has being invited to play as soloist with the Costa Rica National Symphony Orchestra, Dominican Republic Symphony Orchestra, Castella Conservatory Symphony Orchestra, and other orchestras and symphonic bands throughout Latin American countries. He has performed in many occasions on the World Saxophone Congresses, North American Saxophone Congresses, Montreal International Jazz Festival Festival and numerous important Festivals in Latin America. As a soloist and member of SONSAX, Valerio has travelled offering recitals, clinics, master classes and concerts in countries such as Russia, Japan, Canada, United States, Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay, Germany, México, Central America and Panamá.
Valerio is currently working in his DMA degree at the University of Kansas, as part of the KU-UCR partnership initiated in 1958, where he studies saxophone with the distinguished professor, Vince Gnoyek. Since 2010, Javier Valerio became a P. Mauriat Artists. www.javiervalerio.com
